SWISS FINANCE ACADEMY CASES ARE QUANTITATIVE, IN-DEPTH AND SOLVE REAL BUSINESS PROBLEMS. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING TWO CASES THAT OFFER AN INSIGHT INTO THE TYPE OF PROBLEMS THAT STUDENTS MAY BE ASKED TO SOLVE DURING THE PROGRAM.

The first case focuses on an investment banking issue while the second one on a derivatives problem.

Case 1 Outline: Investment Banking Case - Distressed Debt Negotiation and Corporate Financing Strategy

It is the end of fiscal year 2006 for your client Silly Silicon Inc. (the “Company”), a high tech company trying to decide the next step at a difficult stage of its corporate life when there are several financing options but none of them seem right.

Silly Silicon sells products that are gaining market share, but requires large amounts of capital expenditures for infrastructure development over the next five years before it becomes "cash flow positive", i.e. before it starts to receive more cash in revenues than it spends in costs, expenses and critical infrastructure investments.

The rest of the case, which is available to our students, describes in detail the problems faced by this hypothetical business.

Case 2 Outline: Derivatives and Portfolio Management

As a trader you manage accounts for two individuals who are friends and tend to competitively compare their portfolio performance. Both are biased as following - one forbids call options while the other forbids puts. Design two identical portfolio, one with only calls, stocks and cash, and the other with only puts, stocks and cash.

Summary

How would you convince potential investors to provide an additional debt or equity capital to your client? How do you convince your client to go with your advisory service? How would you use options to reduce risk or enhance performance. These are the types of challenges investment bankers and traders face every day. Learning to ask yourself if the company being evaluated is a viable one, if your fund can be optimized in a better way, if valuations are fair and if the risks are fairly assessed, is at the core of the Swiss Finance curriculum.
